You may not be the kind of person who makes New Year’s resolutions, but consider this: if you struggle to get attention for the songs you write, and you don’t plan to do modify how you approach writing music, nothing is going to change.
If you really want 2013 to be a break-out year, you need to change something about how you write music. For many of you, simply committing to making songwriting a regular, daily activity will yield tremendous results.
That simple act of writing even when you don’t feel like it is going to train your musical brain to be more creative and more disciplined.
So how about it? Why not do this right now: Sit down with your day-timer, and find 30- to 60-minute slots on at least 5 days out of 7, that are your times to write. And then… promise yourself to stick to it.
I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a prosperous and happy new year. I hope you make great strides in your venture to become the best songwriter you can be!

Great stuff!
I’ve been reading your stuff for a while now and I have to say that the content in this site is really excellent!
I’m going to be buying your online courses. I’ve been making electronic music for a little over a year now and I’m learning a lot from reading this blog.
I’d like to know if there would be a chance for you to hear and perhaps give a few pointers, regarding my music? (haven’t finished anything worthy of sending you right now but when i do. )
Thanks,
Ermin
Great stuff on here Gary! I’ll definitely use some of the tricks and tips you write about.
I recently started a Facebook group called Song A Week Songwriters. We’re picking a new topic each week and writing a song about it. Thought you might be interested in checking it out.
Thanks Chris – I’d be happy to check it out.
