Music Theory That’s Perfect For Today’s New Learning Situations

School’s back in for most students in North America, and some have been back for a couple of weeks now. For many, schooling looks very different: masks, social distancing, and all the other health protocols that have become standard in most areas of the U.S. and Canada.

Some schools have switched to an online format, and if this is your situation, you may be worried about getting the same level of attention and teaching that you (or your children) are used to getting.

My course, “Easy Music Theory“, is one that I developed years ago as a way for students to learn all the rudiments of music they need to learn, without the need for direct input from a teacher: it was written to be self-directed. It will be a great way for band, piano and other students to learn the basic rudiments of music.

To do the course, you’ll watch short videos, print up worksheets and quizzes, and because it’s downloadable, you don’t need an internet connection once you’ve downloaded the course to your computer — do it anywhere!

It sells in digital download format, for $59 USD. Please read the FAQ below, or visit the Easy Music Theory page for more information and a list of the lessons.

FAQ

If you’re wondering if Easy Music Theory will work for you, here’s an FAQ with some of the questions I get asked the most:

1. My child is 12 years old… Can she learn from this course?

A- Yes, in my experience most children in upper elementary and beyond will find the course easy to use and understand.

2. I’m just entering music college, but don’t have a solid grounding in music rudiments. Can I learn what I need from “Easy Music Theory“?

A-Yes, Easy Music Theory starts at the very beginning (“This is a note”), and takes you right through Grade 2 Rudiments. That’s far enough that you’d be able to do a college-level entrance exam in most music schools.

3. How is the course organized?

A- Every lesson has a short video, taught by me, describing and explaining the concept for that lesson. You’ll then read a short lesson that reinforces what you just saw in the video. There are worksheets to complete, a quiz, and answer sheets to check your answers. Then it’s on to the next lesson. There are 25 lessons in total.

4. How long does it take to complete the entire course?

A- You work at your own pace. Younger students will want to really take their time and get as familiar with the material in each lesson, but it is common for all students — even younger ones — to complete the course in less than a school year.

5. Is the course a digital download?

A- Yes. In years past, Easy Music Theory was sent out on DVD, but in recent years the course became exclusively a downloadable product, as that’s what seems to be easiest for most.

6. Does it really work?

A- Yes! When I was a university instructor, I taught a rudimentary course to young adult students who were preparing to audition for a university degree program in music. I used my own course, and went over the materials in class with them. The vast majority of students passed my course with a mark in the 90s, and barely anyone with a mark less than 85%. If you do the work, you’ll understand the material!
