Madeleine Peyroux Interview/Performance on Soundcheck

Madeleine Peyroux - Standing on the RooftopJust starting to give singer/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux’s recent album “Standing on the Rooftop” a listen. I missed this when it was first released. Also found a “Soundcheck” interview and live studio performance from back on June 16 of this year. I really like her singing, but not that fond of her interpretation of Lennon & McCartney’s “Martha My Dear.” (Here’s a video of that live performance). The Beatles’ version presents really interesting rhythmic syncopations that combine nicely with a changing time signature. Just my opinion, but Madeleine’s much freer rhythms don’t suit the song that well.

But the other tracks are really fantastic. Peyroux’s singing is, for some, an acquired taste. At times, it reminds me what Leonard Cohen would have sounded like if her were female. And slightly happier.

    • Well, I probably won’t get into album reviews in any big way, as I’m more focused on analyzing particular songs rather than whole collections. But once in a while, I do like to make comments on things I’m listening to.
