Songwriting games help to take the pressure off and let you have a bit of fun.
___________
Many authors will start their day by doing some free-writing, which is a sort of speedwriting “write-whatever-pops-into-your-mind” kind of thing. The benefit of speedwriting is that it focuses the mind, clears the cobwebs out, and perhaps most importantly, generates ideas that can serve as starting points for new projects. Most of all, any casual writing exercise such as free-writing tends to take the pressure off, and allow you to have a bit of fun with your writing.
Rather than re-invent the wheel here, I’ve written two posts in the past that will guide you in some free-writing activities.

The first one is called “A Speedwriting Challenge For Songwriters: Musical Bungee Jumping.” The format is simple: write a song as fast as you can. There are three specific challenges described: the “FAST CHALLENGE: 7-minute song”, the “CRAZY CHALLENGE: 5-minute song, and then the ultimate challenge: “BUNGIE-JUMPING: the 2’45” song!
The second one is called “Bolster Your Songwriting Skill With These 5 Writing Games.” Most of the activities listed deal with lyrics, with exercises requiring you to create word partners, brainstorm possible song titles, identifying words with emotional impact, and so on.
So go ahead, have some fun! If after the speedwriting challenge you’d like to post your results, please give the link in the comments below.
