I won’t be able to write a blog post for songwriters for the next couple of days, as I’m happily involved in presenting an orchestral program to 1300 screaming children today.
It’s a program called “The Orchestra Sings”, part of a set of curricula developed by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. Several months ago, elementary schools in the Halifax, Nova Scotia region were given the curriculum, and children have been learning to sing songs, play recorder or violin, to get ready for the big concert.
So the big day is today. The kids will be not only watching Symphony Nova Scotia perform, but they’ll be performing right along with them from their seats in the audience. I’m about to discover what several hundred recorders sounds like when played together! (That can’t be bad, can it!?)
It’s not just exciting for the kids. I’m very aware, as I look out on large audiences of young musicians, that somewhere in that large crowd will be the ones who get inspired enough to eventually make music their life’s work. And they’ll possibly think back to today as being an inspirational, motivational and powerful moment in their lives.
Most of the best musicians I know can think back to a time in their lives to something powerful that shaped their understanding, and inspired their love, of music, so being able to present and exciting program like this one is exciting.
What’s been the inspirational moment in your life that’s made you the song where do you work today? It may not have been a concert; perhaps it was an inspirational musician whose music made you think, “That’s what I want to do!”

This will probably sound a bit corny…I was about seven years old and listening to “Top of the World” by the Carpenters on the radio. I made me so happy, I went outside singing and decided right then and there that I wanted to make other people feel as happy as I did when I heard Karen Carpenter sing. Her voice just resonated with me.
ps. I taught the recorder to elementary aged students in an after school music program for five years. It was a real joy to finally hear them perform for their parents. So much energy and enthusiasm, I can only imagine how powerful several hundred students playing at once will be!
